Three held after bar theft attempt

Quick response by district and mobile squad police officers yesterday led to the arrest of three men from Qormi suspected of planning to rob the Convoy Bar at Luqa industrial estate.

Responding to an alarm that went off at about 2 a.m., district police officers rushed to the scene, backed up by the mobile squad. The police came across a vehicle with two men inside it who, when approached, tried to drive away. The car was, however, intercepted by the police and a search of the vehicle yielded tools that can be used for break-ins.

The men were arrested as was the owner of the car after he was located in the area. The police said there was evidence that an attempt had been made to force open one of the bar windows.

The men, aged 16, 17 and 27, are expected to be arraigned under arrest today. The 17-year-old has already been convicted of a hold-up, police sources said.
