The concert by Italian singer Amedeo Minghi at the Valletta Waterfront on May 13 was an unforgettable experience for all those who have an ear for good music and poetic, inspiring lyrics. Minghi himself seemed surprised at the reception he got from an appreciative audience and seemed to enjoy the concert as much as we did.
However there were organisational glitches that might have dampened the magical atmosphere. The newly revamped Waterfront was the ideal location for the concert but the event was held in a desolate magazine that used to be part of a power station. The place was an utter embarrassment. As if the bleak location weren't bad enough, we had to endure the stench of overused cooking oil.
The show's presenter added his own farcical contribution when he informed the audience that they were about to be treated to a taste of Maltese culture. Up came the Paul Curmi Dancers with an interpretation of Brazil Brazil and Flamenco. It is true, we are living in a globalised world with an increasingly globalised culture, but I think this was taking it a bit too far.
