The government is in the process of drawing up calls for tenders and environmental studies in a bid to alleviate the flooding problems in the centre of the island, according to Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit.

The flood relief projects will be carried out in Birkirkara, Msida, Lija and Balzan, said the minister, who yesterday visited the last phase of the Marsa project.

The government is considering financing the projects through the EU's structural funds, Mr Zammit said.

Specialised machinery and equipment had to be bought to carry out the works.
