May sunnier, drier than average

May was sunnier, warmer and drier than average, the Meteorological Office said yesterday.

With a mean temperature of 20.8°C, the month was 1.7°C warmer than the average May. Indeed, May 23, with the highest temperature reaching 35.3°C, was the warmest May day on record.

At just 2.2mm, last month's rainfall reached only slightly more than one fifth of the average.

And it was a very quiet month for the wind, which for 99 per cent of the time was in the light to moderate category.

May had an average of 10 hours and 36 minutes of sunshine a day, which means a total of almost 25 hours more sunshine than an average May.

The Meteorological Office yesterday urged the public to heed the UV Index forecasts as these are reaching dangerous levels of 10 or more. The sun's UV rays are the strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
