Olga Proell enjoyed a superb competition recently at Marsa to become this year's women's champion at the Malta Royal Golf Club. Proell, who virtually won it on the last four holes of Day One, went into the second day with a six-shot lead.

She had a hole in one, a birdie that was followed by a par and another birdie on the 18th.

She kept her cool throughout Day Two to win the title for the first time after finishing five shots clear of Maureen Borg who has won the title no fewer than 12 times since 1987.

Manuela Roth, another former champion, made a comeback to the competition. The four-times winner finished third.

Ann Thompson was the winner of the Nokia Moya Hann Trophy, a scratch competition for the higher handicaps of 24 and over. She beat Joanne Cassar in a very closely contested match by two strokes.

Apart from trophies, the winners and runners-up were presented with Nokia phones courtesy of Intercomp Ltd.
