The AFM spent Lm1.5 million on illegal immigrants last year, the Prime Minister said in Parliament yesterday.

The outlay included the salaries of soldiers assigned to the migrants, food, clothing , water and electricity, maintenance of detention centres, transport, medical care, telephone cards and training.

The AFM also spent a further Lm128,705 on the purchase of minibuses and vans, a new power generator and the setting up of tents on the grounds of Lyster Barracks.

Furthermore, a Lm140,000 warehouse built for the AFM's needs had to be converted into an immigration centre and new stores now had to be built, Dr Gonzi told Adrian Vassallo (MLP).
