The headline Temporary Visitors' Centre Planned For Ggantija (May 23) begs the question: Why temporary? The article, reporting a debate in Parliament, described how members of Parliament lauded Heritage Malta for accomplishing works - presumably not "temporary" - on the Domus Romana, the Hypogeum, the Tarxien Temples and the National Museum of Fine Arts. The report also said that Heritage Malta has gained approval for multi-million (non-temporary, I may add) projects at Hagar Qim and Mnajdra.

Why is it that Ggantija, the prime prehistoric site of our country, and unique in global terms, is left to wallow with temporary measures? Should it not have been at the top of the list in the government's efforts to protect our cultural heritage?
