Ms Rita Ripard (The Sunday Times, May 21) was somewhat hasty to blame the President when she said he did not turn up to take the salute at the annual Scout and Guide Parade.

Had she checked with either the President's Office or the association she would have found he was asked only a short time before the parade to take the salute when he had been committed quite a long time earlier with all the various organisations at Mellieha for an official visit to the village.

The President's engagements are requested and decided months ahead, not at the last minute.
