In days of old, our magnificient fortifications were attacked by invading foreign armies. Such onslaughts are, thankfully, now history.
However the latest attacking menaces seem to be ugly concrete structures. The most obvious example is a large hotel which mars the Marsamxett side of Valletta's glorious bastions. Gozo's Fort Chambrai has also had its share of modern warfare ...the invaders actually occupy its interior.
The latest attack is on Mdina: outside the city's ancient walls, the recent additions to an establishment stick out like a sore thumb, compromising Mdina's unique skyline. One wonders why our irreplaceable historical heritage is allowed to be degraded.
When tourist brochures are produced, these ugly modern developments are conveniently left out of the published product. However reality speaks for itself. When are we seriously going to defend our historical heritage from further ugly development?
