A group of St Edward's College boys from Year 6 last week paid an educational day trip to Syracuse and Pozzallo at the invitation of John Portelli, a member of the college's board of governors.
The boys were accompanied by their teachers Anna Attard and Catherine Cachia, and their headmistress Anne Tabone. Also accompanying the boys were Prof. Portelli himself, his wife and his daughter Mia, two of whose children were also on the trip.
The boys' excitement was contagious, a college spokesman said. They all turned up blurry eyed at 6.15 a.m. and the new Maria Dolores catamaran left at 7 a.m. "The boat was extremely comfortable and luxurious," one of the students reported.
In Pozzallo, the boys were taken to a playing field and then they were taken by coach to Syracuse, an hour's drive away.
In Syracuse, they visited the beautiful church Madonna Delle Lacrime and the Greek and Roman temples. They had lunch in the old part of the town in an open air restaurant, given that it was "excellent" weather.
Having purchased their souvenirs and delicious Sicilian ice-creams, the boys returned to Pozzallo where they spent some time playing football and volleyball on the beach. This was followed by supper in Pozzallo and then the journey back to Malta, arriving at about 11 p.m., just in time for bed.
