A 24-year-old man was yesterday given a six-month jail term suspended for a year after he admitted hitting the mother of his child in the face.

Magistrate Michael Mallia handed down judgement after hearing that Antoine Schembri, of Birkirkara, wanted to take responsibility for his actions and filed a guilty plea to striking the woman on Wednesday.

The magistrate also heard the woman declare she had forgiven Mr Schembri.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.

Lawyer Chris Cardona appeared for Mr Schembri.
