Preparations for this year's Worldfest, being organised by the Koperattiva Kummerc Gust (KKG) at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta, on June 4, are well underway.

The festival will see Malta's fair trade shop, L-Arka, of 306, St Paul Street, Valletta, offer fairly traded products, delicious food specialities and drinks.

Young refugees from Dar is-Sliem will provide African food, and diverse bands will provide ethnic, blues and jazz music.

The festival will include African theatre and an Italian dance group will perform Capoeira, the traditional Brazilian fusion of dance and martial arts.

KKG administrator Nathalie Grima said this year's Worldfest will celebrate the Global Journey to Fair Trade, a movement initiated by the International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT).

As a member of IFAT, KKG will receive a fair trade banner, which has been on a global journey since 2004. Malta will be the first European country displaying the banner.

The banner carried the fair trade organisation mark, developed by IFAT, with the aim of distinguishing "true" fair trade organisations from the marketing gloss of big corporations and unethical businesses.
