Joelle Cortis recently took part in a 3,000m race at the Marsa track and field stadium and finished comfortably inside the Maltese national junior record for girls.

Although no Maltese female athlete under 20 years of age has ever run faster for the distance, unfortunately for the Pembroke Athleta member, the time of 10:48 cannot be considered as a new national record since the time was set in a mixed-gender race.

It is understood that her club has now made a formal request to the MAAA to have a women's 3,000m event included in the upcoming National Track and Field Championships.

If successful, this would give Cortis the opportunity to officially break this long-standing record which is currently held by her training companion Lisa Marie Bezzina.
