Libel sitting called off due to elusive summons

A libel suit filed by former Finance Minister John Dalli against Labour leader Alfred Sant did not take place yesterday as Dr Sant did not receive the summons.

Magistrate Michael Mallia was informed that the police had successfully delivered the summons to the reception desk of the Labour Party headquarters, in Hamrun. However, it seemed like the summons stopped there and did not make its way to the office of Dr Sant. Mr Dalli sued Dr Sant over allegations made during a press conference at the Labour headquarters and broadcast live on Super One television on June 3, 2004.

Dr Sant had claimed that Mr Dalli was using his influence to direct incoming investment and contracts towards family-run companies.

The case was put off to October 11 "for more information".

Lawyer Pawlu Lia represented Dr Sant.

Lawyer Joseph Zammit Maempel appeared for Mr Dalli.
