A 26-year-old man was yesterday charged with stealing five cars and burgling five establishments over the past four months.
Steve Buttigieg, of Birzebbuga, pleaded not guilty to stealing the cars and stealing several items from various shops and company premises between December last year and April this year.
He was also charged with damaging the establishments he broke into and making a false declaration when he altered the registration plates of a car.
Magistrate Anthony Vella denied Mr Buttigieg's request for bail and ordered that he be placed under the supervision of a probation officer while in preventive custody.
Police Inspector Carmelo Bartolo prosecuted.
Lawyers Giannella Caruana Curran and Mario de Marco appeared for Mr Buttigieg.
