Jupp Heynckes, who coached Real Madrid to the Champions League in 1998 and led Bayern Munich to two league titles in 1989 and 1990, was named coach at Borussia Moenchengladbach yesterday.

Heynckes, 61, was given a two-year contract for his second coaching spell at the club where he was also a player. He had run the team from 1979 to 1987 before moving to Bayern.

He was sacked by Schalke 04 in September 2004. He replaces Horst Koeppel who led the side to a disappointing 10th place in the league.

Heynckes has also worked at Athletic Bilbao, Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica.

He scored 195 goals for Moenchengladbach as a striker between 1965 and 1978 in 283 Bundesliga matches.
