A total of 892 people including 63 foreigners were found working without informing the Employment and Training Corporation in the first four months of this year.

Education and Employment Minister Louis Galea told Labour MP Carmelo Abela in reply to parliamentary questions that when the ETC found foreigners working without the necessary permits, it informed the police and took legal action against the employers.

In the other cases, those concerned had to fill in a job initiation form and were charged an administrative fine of Lm25.

The minister said in the first four months of this year, a total of 80 people were caught working while registering for work.

They were struck off the employment register and their social benefits were stopped. Where appropriate, action against their employers were initiated.

The minister said that 2,226 working permits for foreigners were issued in the first four months of this year.
