The amount of waste dumped in sites managed by WasteServ declined by just over one million tons last year when compared to 2004, figures given in Parliament yesterday show.

WasteServ manages Maghtab, Qortin, Sant'Antnin and a number of sites for building debris.

Dumping in those sites reached 2.52 million tonnes in 2004 and 1.49 million tonnes last year. The biggest difference was in the dumping of building debris in the approved sites, with 2.1million tonnes of debris having been dumped in 2004 and 1.1 million tonnes last year.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Joe Cassar (PN), the minister said that ever since bring-in sites were introduced in July 2003, 1.6 million kilogrammes of paper, 515,251kg of plastic, 277,680kg of metal and 908,765kg of glass were collected.
