A question of truth

How utterly ridiculous of Revel Barker to state (May 15) that "It would have been remarkable, in those days, if (prior to the commencement of His Ministry) Jesus had not actually married... and it would have been unlikely if Jesus and his wife did not produce children", or that his own Christian beliefs would not be shaken to learn that such a marriage had taken place.

As if something as sacred and life-changing as marrying someone and fathering children would not have been worth noting in the Gospels had Jesus indeed done them! How puerile of Mr Barker to suggest that the four Evangelists may have conveniently or deliberately omitted such information for some unknown or ulterior motive, but that we shouldn't be worrying about it!

In fact, the worrying aspect of this whole The Da Vinci Code controversy is precisely this: that it leads people who still have no or only a superficial Christian faith to question whether the Gospels are the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth. And it is just not possible for anyone to cultivate a deep, intimate relationship with another person, let alone a person like Jesus, while being unsure whether or not there is any important information about that person that has been withheld from them.

It is like saying that someone can calmly marry another person who says: "I love you, but there are some very significant things that I have done during the past 20 or 30 years of my life that I am not going to tell you about. This should not affect our relationship in any way, even if you find out about them later on!"

I for one will not be adding one measly cent to the profits being made by all those involved in inventing and spreading such drivel about a person with whom I am trying to build a relationship.
