On April 22, the Malta Weightlifting Federation organised the 2006 Malta Open Championships at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
This exciting display of strength and power was the last local weightlifting fixture before the national team lifters head for Cyprus next month to compete in the Small Nations Weightlifting tournament in Limassol, between June 8 and 10.
National Champion Clint Grech snatched first place with a Snatch and Clean & Jerk total of 192 kg, thus earning 254 points. In second place, a new and promising lifter from the Salidav Olympic Weightlifting Club, Matthew Muscat Inglott, lifted a total of 190 kg to earn 232 points after some fierce competition from Stephen Borg, who took third place. Borg lifted a total of 183 kg for 224 points.
In fourth place, another lifter from the Salidav Olympic Weightlifting Club, Shehu Hannan, totaled 162 kg for 206 points.
Talented local lifter Kevin Cassar was unable to compete as he is currently studying in the UK. Earlier in the season however, he lifted a total of 264 kg, earning an impressive 310 points.
The lifters who will represent Malta in Cyprus next month are Kevin Cassar, Clint Grech, Matthew Muscat Inglott, and Stephen Borg. They will be accompanied by Mark Pirotta and Jesmond Caruana as officials, and David Saliba as head of delegation.
