For the millions of Liverpool fans around the world, May 25, 2005 remains one of the most unforgettable days in the history of the legendary English Premier League club.

Memories are still fresh of that famous night in Istanbul when Rafael Benitez's men defied the odds and hit back from three goals down to beat Milan in a penalty shoot-out and lift their fifth European Cup.

Three months later, Liverpool went on to make it a double of successes in Europe when again they fought back from behind to beat Russia's CSKA Moscow 3-1 in the UEFA Super Cup final in Monaco.

In the next few days, Liverpool fans in Malta and Gozo will renew their memories of those incredible exploits when they get the opportunity to see the two coveted UEFA trophies which were brought over to Malta yesterday by the Liverpool Supporters Club.

Liverpool FC Museum Curator Stephen Done and his assistant Steve Newton are here with the trophies.

Ronnie Camilleri, supporters club president, could not hide his joy when the Champions Cup and Super Cup were put on show before a press conference at the Westin Dragonara.

"Today is another great day for us," Camilleri told those present.

"It's a huge honour for the supporters club to have these two priceless memorabilia here.

"Obviously, the presence of 'Liverpool's' Champions Cup lifted by captain Steven Gerrard in Istanbul last year has added significance as it is the first time it has left the UK."

The Liverpool Supporters Club boast over 1,000 members in Malta and Gozo. Camilleri said it is in occasions like these that the committee transmits its gratitude and appreciation to the ever growing Liverpool fan base on our islands.

Today, the Champions Cup and Super Cup will be in Gozo and displayed during a reception at the Grand Hotel, Mgarr.

Tomorrow, it will be the turn of the Maltese fans to have a closer look at the trophies at the Westin Dragonara in an activity that starts at 7 p.m.

Done, in his first trip to Malta, highlighted the warm reception he received by the Maltese.

"We are really pleased to be here among so many people who have Liverpool FC at heart," he said.

"We've been here for only a few hours but I am already impressed by the warmth of the Maltese people. You really deserve to be the first country outside the UK to host the famous Champions League trophy."

Before May, 2005, Anfield had an average of 50,000 to 60,000 visitors a year. But in the last year the numbers doubled and until last month over 120,000 fans had travelled to Merseyside to see the stadium and club's museum.

Done said that since he started as curator at the Liverpool museum he dreamt that one day he would be in charge of an 'original' Champions League trophy.

"Since 1997, I always said that it would have been wonderful for a great club like Liverpool to win a fifth European Cup that would give us an authentic trophy to keep at Anfield forever," he said.

"Nine years on, and this dream has come to reality. It's a big achievement not only for the club but also for the millions of Liverpool fans around the world.

"This is a great time for us. We've won the FA Cup last week and now we hope that more trophies will be heading to Anfield in future."
