Neptunes face Sirens with title in sight
Neptunes Vodafone will be looking to seal a sixth Winter League title this evening when they take on 2X Sirens in their final match of the pre-season competition at the National Pool.
Neptunes are currently enjoying a two-point lead over nearest rivals Sliema Burger King who are also in action today - against San Giljan Zara in the opening encounter.
Sliema have to win their match to stay in contention but if Karl Rizzo's Reds manage to avoid defeat against Sirens they will be crowned champions irrespective of the result of the previous match. If Neptunes lose and Sliema win, then a decider will have to be played today week at 5 p.m.
In the corresponding first-round fixture, Neptunes just managed to edge Sirens 7-6.
Last week, Neptunes were in top form after scoring the biggest win of the competition - a 29-2 thrashing of bottom-placed Mar-saxlokk as Sirens returned to winning ways following a convincing 10-3 win over San Giljan.
In today's opening match, Sliema will be looking to pile up the pressure on the leaders to keep the interest alive.
However, they will have be wary since the Saints were behind the surprise result of the Winter League so far after beating Sliema 5-4 in the first round.
Meanwhile, the ASA announced this week that the draws for the preliminary and final rounds of the national leagues this summer will be held on Thursday at the Radisson Baypoint Hotel.
