I fully agree with Emmanuel J. Galea (April 13) and add my concern about the way our roads are being designed and constructed.
In this regard, I mention one stupid example - the Birguma bypass. The way this bypass has been designed is definitely an example of incompetent road architecture and lack of consultation with the people residing in the area. Before mentioning the problems involved it is important for readers to know that, during the construction of this bypass, I had called the architect involved (as I had foreseen these problems) and tried to explain. I was told quite arrogantly that we (Birguma residents) should abide by this layout.
Once the road was completed, the result was so bad that a roundabout had to be introduced to allow smooth traffic flow from the north, San Gwann, Naxxar and Iklin. Then, a number of traffic signs were put up to create a terrible way for Birguma residents to reach their homes.
I live almost at the bottom of this bypass and to go to St Paul's Bay I first have to drive to Iklin (!) and then start on my way to St Paul's Bay - laughable. The architect involved must have erased the word roundabout from his books.
Protests and complaints have been made and funnily enough the Naxxar local council is now concerned (election results maybe?).
They say that a concrete proposal is being prepared and will be presented to the central authorities.
My suggestion is that they should save their time-wasting proposal and simply introduce two roundabouts and solve this issue; and while doing so perhaps install some lights as well, as there are none!
