Tottenham Hotspur have signed Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov from Bayer Leverkusen for 16 million euros, subject to approval of a work permit.

The 25-year-old Bulgarian international had agreed personal terms and would join the English club on July 1, Spurs said yesterday.

"Tottenham is a club that is building something special. The squad has some terrific young players, an excellent manager and coaching staff and I am looking forward to playing my part," Berbatov said.

Berbatov's contract with German Bundesliga side Leverkusen had not been due to expire until 2009 but a clause allowed him to join another club for at least 15 million euros.

Berbatov said last month he was interested in moving to the Spanish Primera Liga. Spurs' London rivals Arsenal were also linked with the player.
