Lawrie Jay (May 12) thinks that he has found a solution to the euro problem in the form of a "euro cheque book account". Unfortunately for retailers etc. this is not so. The problem is not so simple as, in my experience, banks still charge a commission when foreign currency notes are paid into an account denominated in the same currency. This does not apply, of course, in the case of inter-bank remittances in the same currency which is why Mr Jay probably came to the wrong conclusion.
