Wall Street's Worst Nightmare. Tough Talking Prosecutor Tracks Down Securities Scams.

This was the headline over a beautiful photo of a person who has dual citizenship - in US and Malta - namely Joseph Philip Borg.

I often read about this son of a Maltese, Philip J. Borg, or see him interviewed on different channels on TV. I feel so proud of him. I knew him as a young boy in New York when he was studying to be a scientist and was considered the best science student in the US.

His school entered him in several science fairs all over the US and also used to arrange for him to enter science exams with the best science students in the country. Our Maltese student always came first and received many medals and blue ribbons.

Both President Richard Nixon and Governor Nelson A. Rockerfeller of New York suggested to him that he enter the political arena and he was invited to train in Washington.

Somehow he changed his mind and entered the university as a law student, in which profession he excelled.

Back to the paper article mentioned above. It was stated that Prof. Borg took over as president of the North America Securities Association for the second time, an achievement only matched once in the 87-year history of this organisation, which regulates securities in the US and its territories, Canada and Mexico.

Prof. Borg stated that he wants to ally more closely with the financial industry, because it is in the best interest of the legitimate actors to participate in the process of rooting out the frauds.

Among so many other matters, it was also mentioned that this prosecutor has never lost a criminal court case. He was quoted as saying that he is not satisfied that the culprits are fined millions of dollars, without going to jail. He wants to see these people in prison.

Prof. Borg has been travelling practically all over the world on the invitation of many countries to make speeches and attend conferences.

Recently I was thinking of the saying "like father like son". His father helped many Maltese in finding jobs, including myself. Mr Borg was regional manger for Kinney National, a conglomerate company which employed about 5,000 people. I understand that he made this statement to friends of his, namely: "I cannot refuse to help a Maltese find a job".

After years in New York refusing to take charge of the Malta soccer team, he finally gave in and decided to be the team manager for a short period. In 18 months and only engaging Maltese players, he managed to help the team become, for the first time, section champions. For this occasion, the Maltese club organised a beautiful dinner dance in his honour at which time he was presented with a trophy from his all-Maltese players.

It is proper to mention that Prof. Borg's father is the founder of the Zebbug Rangers F.C. which he and John Caruana founded in 1943. Mr Borg managed this club and coached the Rangers until he left Malta in January 1953. I knew him in Malta and also in New York where he was held in high esteem.

I have no idea where Mr Borg is at the moment but I would like to thank him for his help to the Maltese community.
