The article about wardens about to start testing vehicle emissions on the spot (May 9) can't be serious.

I mean, will wardens go to the bus terminus in Valletta and start testing all the buses and taxis there, not to mention the trucks and heavy vehicles in the building industry?

It's common knowledge that bus drivers, taxi-drivers and building contractors are above the law. The police, the wardens and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority do not dare touch them.

Some time ago there was some correspondence about the wanton dust pollution generated by building works and what should be done to minimise it. And what came of it? Absolutely nothing! At Qawra and Bugibba, just to mention two examples, one comes across mountains of rubble and dust near building sites and half-finished properties.

Most of these ugly and unhealthy sites are under the noses of hotels and guesthouses, enhancing the view and the country's reputation of a couldn't care less attitude.
