Boxing - Former champion Patterson dies

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson, who became the youngest boxer to gain the title when he knocked out Archie Moore in 1956 at the age of 21, died on Thursday. He was 71. Patterson, who had suffered from Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer, died at his home in New Paltz, New York. After an amateur career that included Olympic gold as a middleweight in 1952, Patterson turned professional. On November 30, 1956, he claimed the world heavyweight title vacated by the retirement of Rocky Marciano by knocking out Moore in the fifth round.

Cycling - Giro d'Italia

Australia's Robbie McEwen won the 231-km sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia from Busseto to Forli yesterday for his third victory in this year's race. The Davitamon rider beat Germany's Olaf Pollack and Tomas Vaitkus of Lithuania in a sprint finish. Pollack earned a 12-second time bonus for finishing second and took the overall race lead from his T-Mobile team-mate Serhiy Honchar. Today's 236-km seventh stage from Cesena to Saltara is the longest of this year's Giro. It has three climbs and a short uphill finish.

Tennis - Hewitt to miss Hamburg Masters

A leg injury has forced Lleyton Hewitt to withdraw from next week's Hamburg Masters, disrupting his preparation for the French Open. Hewitt strained a muscle in his left calf muscle while training and despite receiving constant physiotherapy, he has been unable to recover in time. Hewitt is now planning to resume playing at Portschach in Austria the following week as well as making a rare doubles appearance at this month's French Open to boost his chances of winning a second Wimbledon title.

Swimming - Manaudou breaks record

Laure Manaudou of France broke the 400 metres freestyle world record when she clocked four minutes 3.03 seconds at the national championships yesterday. She bettered the previous mark set by American Janet Evans in Seoul in September 1988 by 0.82 seconds.
