Raising the price of bread is justified as the price of fuel has affected one and all. That is the bakers' claim.

However, what about the consumers' claims? Why is the weight of the loaf not printed on the cellophane bag it is wrapped in?

Why is the weight of an 800 grams loaf reduced to 460 grams? Why is a 19c loaf priced 23c just because it is sliced? Where are the inspectors of the Department of Consumer Affairs?

I checked the weight of a loaf at the leading bakery I purchased it from, in the presence of the baker and cashier. The baker claimed that an 800 gram loaf shrivels to 460 grams during the baking process. The cashier offered to change the loaf, but all the other loafs (tal-Malti) on sale were of equal size.

Surely what's good for the baker is good for the consumer.
