Mermaid Media Entertainment Ltd yesterday launched the first edition of the Malta Television Awards, created to honour outstanding Maltese creativity, talent and achievement in the field of television.
The awards will be given under the categories of programming, performance, technical and creative. The deadline for submissions is July 21, the nominations night is August 25 and the awards will be given on September 16 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, in Valletta.
Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech, under whose auspices the awards are being held, said that as minister responsible for broadcasting policy and the funding given to programmes under the extended public service obligation, he supported initiatives which recognised the abilities of the Maltese in the television sector.
These awards, he said, will fill a void which has existed since the Broadcasting Authority stopped organising its own awards.
One award will be The Charles Arrigo Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring and commemorating a person who has contributed greatly to the television sector.
