Old Firm rivals clash in semi-finals

Sliema Wanderers will have to battle past Old Firm rivals Floriana in the FA Trophy semi-finals in their bid to win the competition for a record 20th time. The Blues are also seeking to make up for the upset of missing out on a fourth consecutive Premier League title after surrendering the sceptre to Birkirkara.

Holders Birkirkara are looking to win their fourth FA Trophy and crown a superb season with a memorable double but their task was made somewhat difficult yesterday as the draw pitted them against Hibernians. The latter are still looking to secure a berth in European club competitions next season.

Last week, the Stripes celebrated their second Premier League title in the club's 56-year history with a 1-0 victory over Hibs. Their festivities will reach a climax on Sunday when they play their last match in the league against the Wanderers.

With Floriana more focused on a crucial Relegation Pool decider tomorrow against Mosta, Sliema should start favourites to reach the final. They are already sure of European football next season but a good run in the cup could mean a berth in the more lucrative UEFA Cup rather than the Intertoto Cup.

The same goes for Hibs who have no other option but to eliminate Birkirkara and win the FA Trophy to entertain hopes of a UEFA Cup place. If not, the Paolites could end up playing in the Intertoto Cup next month (first leg: June 17 or 18) against a team from Bosnia.

FA Trophy SFs
(Friday, May 19) 7.30 p.m. Floriana vs Sliema. (Saturday, May 20) 5 p.m. Birkirkara vs Hibernians.
