A total of 34 hotels have closed down since 2001 and 16 were opened, Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said yesterday.

He told Labour MP Adrian Vassallo in reply to a Parliamentary question that two of the hotels which had closed down were five-star, seven were four-star, 14 three-star, nine two-star and two were guest houses.

Four of the newly opened hotels are five-star, seven four-star and five were three-star.

The minister said that while the number of tourist beds in December 2001 was of 38,701, in May this year it was 39,919.
