Pembroke Dock Quins ran out 7-5 winners against a Malta 'A' team that just couldn't finish off some promising moves during last weekend's International Clubs Tournament at Marsa.

The wise heads in the Pembroke team kept the play tight and starved Malta 'A' from quality possession for their speedy backs. But it was touch and go throughout, either team could have won the final.

Malta 'A' had a perfect start, scoring in the first minute, with Sean Doublesin swooping on a dropped pass and running it in. Pembroke used the boot and wind to get into a scoring position. They succeeded with a pushover try from a five-metre scrum.

It was a suspense filled last five minutes as Malta 'A' camped inside the Pembroke line looking for the drive over but repeatedly took the wrong options.

The Dock Quins supporters on the sideline were a worried lot, at this juncture, thinking their team had lost it, but they held their line.

Eight teams were involved in the tournament, the locals having the Marauders veterans team besides Malta 'A'. Ay Nik Stags RFC from Cyprus, Bugbrooke RFC (Midlands), Helensburgh RFC from Scotland, Tarletton Terriers RFC, Old Leamingtonians RFC (Warwickshire) and Pembroke Dock Quins RFC (Wales) took part.

Meanwhile, the final of the Barclay's Cup, between Stompers and Kavallieri, will be played tomorrow afternoon at Hamrun with a curtain-raiser between Overseas RFC and Hereford.
