A 19-year-old man was yesterday charged with defiling a 14-year-old girl and encouraging her to prostitute herself over the past months.
Matthew Borg, of Hamrun, was also charged with living off the earnings of prostitution.
Lawyer Anglu Farrugia asked Magistrate Giovanni Grixti to grant bail to his client.
Police Inspector Sharon Tanti objected to the request arguing there was the risk that Mr Borg would approach the victim since he knew where she lived and which school she attended.
The prosecuting officer added that the police were still investigating the possibility that there may have been another teenage victim.
Magistrate Grixti granted Mr Borg bail on condition he does not leave his parent's house in Hamrun. He also ordered him not to approach or try to contact the girl or go anywhere near her home or school.
The accused was bound by a personal guarantee of Lm1,000.
