Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday inaugurated a new boys' secondary school in Kirkop that forms part of St Benedict's College.

The college incorporates a number of feeder primary schools in nearby towns and villages.

The new school will be open to the public on Sunday when a programme of activities will be held between 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

It was built on an area of 24 tumoli, 13,000 square metres of which are being used for recreational purposes. It has 150 rooms, 42 of which are used as classrooms. The rest include 35 resource rooms, nine science laboratories, nine technology laboratories and eight computer laboratories apart from rooms for other purposes. Each of the three floors is accessible for persons with special needs.

The Ministry of Education said the school will be further developed in the coming months to include a hall, canteen, changing rooms, new offices and a sports complex.

The project was part of the Education Ministry's programme to build new schools and to modernise all state schools, being implemented through the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools.
