Two men were allegedly caught in possession of five kilogrammes of cannabis resin after a car chase which ended with their arrest in Marsascala on Wednesday evening, the police said.
The drugs were found following weeks of investigation and surveillance by the police in Marsaxlokk.
The car with the two suspected drug traffickers was first intercepted in the limits of Marsaxlokk. When the suspects spotted the police they drove off at high speed with the police chasing them, the police said.
At one stage the suspects' car hit another vehicle and also ran over a pedestrian. Yet, the police said, the car drove on at a dangerous speed despite police warnings. The car was eventually stopped by the police in Marsascala.
Four kilogrammes of cannabis resin, already cut and prepared for trafficking, were found inside the suspects' car, the police said.
Another kilogramme of cannabis resin was found by the police in a road along the route of the car chase. The two men, one aged 30 from Marsaxlokk and another aged 37 from Marsa, are being held. A woman from Marsaxlokk was also arrested and is being investigated in connection with the drug haul.
Arraignments are expected in the coming days, the police said.
Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna appointed a team of court experts to help in the inquiry.
