The Malta Union Club Open, played last week, saw the participation of various established players and newcomers to the sport.

Once again, the men's 'A' event was won by Mark Lupi who completed a hat-trick of tournament wins this season.

Lupi was the clear winner in the round robin play-offs, defeating Karl Grech Orr and Ivan Balzan in the process.

Johanna Rizzo, once again competing against male opponents, finished a respectable fifth.

Rizzo's national team colleague, Sue Aquilina, gave herself a deserved birthday present by placing seventh overall.

The men's 'B' event finalists were Alex Scerri and Martin Zammit. Scerri won the final game 9-6 for his first title.

Organisers had to include a separate women's 'B' event which was won by Lorna Borg. In the final she beat Michelle Azzopardi 3-2.

Borg received her trophy from Malta Squash official Gail Dunkerley who herself also took part for the first time and managed a creditable fourth place.

Dunkerley lost to Anna-Maria Bonnici, yet another newcomer, in the play-off for third place.
