The St Mary Fireworks Factory of Mqabba was yesterday declared overall winner of the Malta International Fireworks Festival which was held over the weekend in Grand Harbour to commemorate the second anniversary of Malta's accession to the European Union.
The much-awaited result by the participating fireworks factories' members, not to mention the public were announced by the adjudicating panel chairman Charles Briffa during a ceremony at the Valletta Waterfront.
Apart from netting the overall trophy, the St Mary factory was also awarded the 'best original', 'best choreography', and 'best synchronisation to music' trophies.
The St Michael Fireworks Factory of Lija won 'best fireworks shells' and 'best colours' trophies.
Proudly displaying the overall winner trophy, Ronald Zammit, coordinator of the St Mary factory said the people of Mqabba were eagerly awaiting the result. "I am contacting my colleagues at the village to break the news," he said.
Other trophies were presented to the other competitors including the 15th August Fireworks Factory of Mosta, the Jubilee Fireworks Company of the UK, and Luso Pirotecnia Fireworks Company of Portugal. Another trophy was presented to Orzella Fireworks Company of Italy which was not a competitor but provided the final display.
