Appreciation - Adam Bartolo

Mr John Coleiro, of Msida, writes:

The sad news of Adam's illness reached me on Easter Saturday. He was by then feeling too poorly to receive visitors, so I thought I could offer some support by dropping him a line.

After putting some thoughts together on Easter Sunday, I was ready to mail my letter when an early call on Monday confirmed that Adam had just passed peacefully away. His time was up, too soon some may say, but it is comforting to know that it was time well spent.

There was nothing extraordinary about Adam, except his simplicity and humility. And that is what, in an ironical way, made him special.

He worked hard from a young age and continued to do so up to his retirement. The fruits of his labour were never intended to fulfil any personal ambition, but were rather an expression of love to the family he held so dear to his heart. Besides being there for his wife and children, he looked after his ailing parents on a daily basis, forfeiting holidays and rest periods to fulfil his filial duties continually with love and devotion.

In my 17 years working for him, and with him, I was touched by this altruistic quality in Adam. For him it was a pleasure to be of service to others. He had ample opportunity to express this quality in the pharmacy he ran. He had time to listen to his clients' complaints and offered compassion and solace whenever needed. To myself, this was an eye-opening experience in seeing Christ in my afflicted brothers and sisters at my place of work, and learning how to respond charitably Adam had indeed a heart of gold, and those who had the fortune to be touched by it will undoubtedly miss the man, but are happy to know that his soul is already reaping its reward.

"But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. They are at peace." (Book of Wisdom 3, 1-2)

To his devoted wife Grace, and his beloved children Adam and Amanda, I offer my deepest sympathies.
