The first edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival will be held today and tomorrow at the Valletta Waterfront at 9.30 p.m. to commemorate the second anniversary of Malta's accession to the European Union.
The event is being presented by the Ministry for Tourism and Culture and the Malta Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Malta Pyrotechnics Association. Three Maltese and two foreign fireworks factories will be competing with each another with their respective pyro-musical displays.
The winners of the festival will be selected by a team of international pyrotechnic experts and will be announced on Monday. The public can vote for the display of their choice via a televoting system.
Apart from these displays, throughout the two festival nights seven local fireworks factories will be demonstrating their abilities in the field of traditional Maltese fireworks. These displays will also include mechanical ground fireworks displays.
A spectacular pyro-musical display by Orzella Fireworks from Italy will end the festival.
Three of the local fireworks factories taking part in the festival have joined forces and published a commemorative magazine.
The magazine, to be distributed against a contribution to anyone attending the festival at Valletta Waterfront, carries information about the factories - namely St Michael's Fireworks factory of Lija, 15th August Pyrotechnic Society of Mosta and St Mary Fireworks Factory of Mqabba.
There are also write-ups on the competing factories and foreign participants, together with the full programme of events.
With the Lm3 tickets to view the festival from the Valletta Waterfront practically sold out, those wishing to have the best views of the spectacular displays and enjoy the shore-based entertainment still have the opportunity to purchase the few remaining Lm1.50 tickets.
The public is invited to vote for the best display by televoting or sms as follows:
