Recently, Attard industrial estate was mentioned in the media in the context of a visit by a political leader as part of his party's May 1 activities.

It is indeed sad that this industrial estate is in such a state of abandonment. However, I would like to point out that since the industrial estate is practically in the middle of a residential area, care should be exercised on the types of trades which are allowed to set up shop there. The unused and abandoned parts can be put to better use for the benefit of the young Attard community.

There is ample space in the area for a community centre and some basic sports facilities like a multipurpose court. Parts of the perimeter wall can be pulled down and the area landscaped to give a sense of open space. One of the abandoned factories can be converted into an area for exhibitions and other artistic expressions. Such an initiative might encourage residents to form sports clubs and other local associations.

Attard local council should take the initiative and pressure the government into giving the locality the community facilities it deserves.
