A German animal rescue organisation has been so moved by the work of Noah's Ark Sanctuary that it has pledged to extend its international programme to Malta.

Internationalen Tierschutzvereins Grenzenlos eV will be funding the Noah's Ark neutering project that should cover over 100 stray dogs in the north of the island.

Noah's Ark founder Fabio Ciappara said events started to unfolded when Jutta Spang, a German tourist, discovered the sanctuary while on holiday in Malta and was touched by the plight of the stray dogs.

She flew back to Germany intent on helping out and making a difference. She roped in Helga Körnig of the huge German animal organisation and together they pledged to help Noah's Ark volunteers.

Ms Spang wasted no time in returning to Malta with her plans for a neutering programme, which will be funded by the German organisation and organised by Noah's Ark.

She also brought two carriers with her, so that she could take back two dogs of the sanctuary, which will be homed in Germany.

The lucky dogs are Twiggy, a Pharaoh hound, and Hamish a comic, fluffy little dog, which had both been rescued by Noah's Ark about four months ago.

Twiggy had been picked up looking like a skeleton roaming the streets of Mellieha while Hamish had been abandoned on the main road at the entrance to the town.

Last week both dogs were off on the adventure of a lifetime - to a warm and loving home in Germany. Their progress is being monitored by Noah's Ark and the German organisation.
