There were 7,693 persons registering for work with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) at the end of March, an increase of 24 over the preceding month, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Compared to the figures for March 2005, the number of registered unemployed dropped by 325 persons.

Unemployment in Malta reached 7,000 while in Gozo it stood at 693. Of these 2,409 (31.3 per cent) were under the age of 25 and 2,041 (26.5 per cent) were aged 45 and over.

Of the unemployed, 44.8 per cent had been looking for a job for less than 20 weeks and another 34.3 per cent had been looking for a job for more than a year.
