The Prime Minister appealed to civil society yesterday to join the government in making education a pillar on which the country's future could be built.
Dr Gonzi said this should be a national project and a common goal for all to explain to workers and young people the new careers and opportunities available.
Concluding a meeting with unions and constituted bodies, in connection with Worker's Day celebrations on Monday, Dr Gonzi said this year's theme focused on "more investment means more work".
He said that by investment, he intended the word to have a wider scope and include investment in human resources, training and in the country.
"As a party, our creed is to present our children and workers with the tools that will allow them to shape their own destiny. Let us empower our people and give them these opportunities," he said.
Two years into EU membership, the government was focused on how it would inject important sectors, such as information technology, with funds obtained from the EU.
"We are planning that within 10 years, IT will be become a pillar of the economy," he said.
