The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association said it was concerned about the "frivolous" issue of permits by local councils to catering stall vendors such as the ones set up in St George's Bay last week during a party held in the area.
"Commercial establishments pay thousands of pounds to authorities in licensing, food and safety hygiene, and royalties to be able to operate their business. This is not to mention the employment these establishments generate and associated costs they have to contend with in the process.
"To have these food stalls set up business next door to commercial establishments is deplorable and the MHRA questions who checks on the health and safety aspect of these movable stalls and what kind of enforcement is carried out on the spot to ensure that these are only selling what was agreed in the permit. Notwithstanding also environment considerations and whether these provide necessary bins for the litter they generate in the process," the MHRA said.
It called on local councils to make sure that the interest of the commercial outlets in any area are protected and to give permits for stalls only where no services are being provided.
