Police spent over one-and-a-half hours quelling an uprising at the Floriana detention centre last night, as irregular immigrants staged yet another noisy mass protest.

No injuries were reported despite the chaos at the detention centre, located within the police headquarters.

Police sources said the disorder started at around 6.30 p.m. when three immigrants - a Palestinian, an Eritrean and an Algerian - asked to speak to a police inspector.

The Palestinian managed to break out of the centre and tried to jump over the bastions but was restrained by the police, sources told The Times.

Within minutes, all hell broke loose as the detainees started smashing window panes and setting fire to wood, rubbish and plastic.

Even though the press could not get close to the site, the racket could be heard in the distance while smoke billowed out of the building for a few minutes.

None of the immigrants managed to flee, unlike a month ago when the detainees staged a mass escape, sending the police on a wild chase around Valletta until they were rounded up.
