Australia is proud of its athletes. In a nation of only 20 million they excel in all sports as shown by results in the recent eighth Commonwealth Games held in the city of Melbourne where they won the most medals.

The Australian Post Office quickly got into the act and issued stamps with the images of the elite sportsmen. We will be licking for shooters Adam Vella (of Maltese descent) and Michael Diamond (of Greek descent). They won gold in shooting; men's trap pairs.

It would be a tremendous lift and indeed proper if Maltapost also released stamps to commemorate Rebecca Madyson (double trap individual), the first ever silver medallist for Malta in an international event. The same can be said for talented William Chetcuti, a bronze medallist at the same games.

It would be a wonderful boost for our athletes trying so hard to compete with limited resources available to them compared with sportsmen from other counties. We must lift the images of these successful Maltese and the issue of commemorative stamps is one way to do it.
