Reference is made to the letter entitled "Number plates" (The Sunday Times, April 2).

The Authority is aware that there are a number of luxury vehicles, including four-wheel drives, as your correspondent rightly pointed out, on our roads which bear 'K' and 'Y' plates. Vehicles bearing 'K' and 'Y' plates are not for private use but should be short-term leased or chauffeur-driven.

To curb this abuse once and for all, the Authority has introduced the Fourth Schedule of the Motor Vehicles Registration Tax for K and Y. To this end, the Authority is taking action against owners of vehicles bearing K and Y plates which are not being used accordingly, i.e. short-term hire or chauffeur-driven.
