The Maltese will today keep their appointment with centuries-old tradition for the feast of San Girgor, the highlights of which will be a procession in Zejtun and the traditional San Girgor outing at Marsaxlokk.

Archbishop Joseph Mercieca will lead the procession which starts from the small church dedicated to St Klement at 9.30 a.m. The church is situated close to Zejtun on the road linking Fgura with Zabbar.

There will be a celebration at the Zejtun parish church when the procession reaches the locality. It will then proceed to the old church of Zejtun where a concelebration will take place. This church is dedicated to St Catherine but is known as ta' San Girgor precisely because of the procession which is traditionally held on the first Wednesday after Easter.

The old parish church of St Gregory was built in 1436 on the site of an early chapel, of which the nave and façade survived and are incorporated in the "newer" edifice.

The low dome was added in the mid-16th century and is one of the earliest examples of dome construction by the Knights.

The San Girgor procession was held for the first time in Malta on March 12, 1543.
