Malta was represented at a meeting of national archivists from the 25 EU countries in Vienna earlier this month to discuss challenges facing the sector.

The meeting was part of the programme linked to the Austrian presidency of the EU.

Candidate countries Bulgaria and Macedonia were also present as was Switzerland.

Among the themes discussed were measures to prevent theft from archives, disaster prevention, digitisation and the compilation of a database of legal archival texts.

The findings on the implementation of data protection and its effects on archives' services were presented by Poland.

Malta was represented by national archivist Charles Farrugia, who gave an account on how data protection and archive legislation are being applied in Malta.

The Maltese authorities were praised for the achievements in the archives sector during 2005, in particular the new archives legislation and the introduction of archives and records management studies at the University of Malta.
